Canine Ovariohysterectomy Discharge Instructions

Confinement

  • Indoors or confined for 10-14 days.

Bathing

  • None for 10 days (until the surgery site is healed over).

Diet

  • Routine.

Next Appointment

  • Please call for an appointment for suture removal in 10 to 14 days.

Special Instructions

  1. Check the incision at least once daily for any pain, heat, swelling, redness, or discharge.
  2. Make sure she continues to feel well and eat well.
  3. Keep her as quiet as possible and the incision site clean until suture removal.
  4. Bring her back in 10 to 14 days for suture removal and a recheck of the incision.

General Information

  • Your pet has just been confined in our hospital and has received the best care we are capable of giving. She may not have eaten or drank as she would at home and, therefore, may seem to be overly hungry and thirsty. Do not overfeed or give excessive amounts of water, as this may cause vomiting.

YOUR PET HAS UNDERGONE MAJOR SURGERY. Do not allow excessive playing, jumping, or running as this may cause damage to the incision and delay the normal healing process. If you observe any drainage from the incision, please call the clinic immediately for advice on further care. If your pet chews at her sutures, please attempt to discourage this, as it will cause irritation at the surgery site. If requested, we will provide an Elizabethan collar to prevent chewing at the sutures.
