They are available only from veterinarians and should be used only after a diagnosis has been made by a veterinarian. Prescription Diet is sold only through veterinary hospitals.

Science Diet was made available in 1968 to the veterinary community. These high quality foods were manufactured according to the same stringent standards as Prescription Diet products. Because Science Diet foods are formulated for healthy pets, they may be purchased by clients without a veterinarian's recommendation.
